The Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) is increasing its vigilance of labour brokers to check that they are paying across moneys to the council.
According to the Operation Manager’s July report, labour brokers owed the council in excess of R14m from the beginning of this year up until July.
The biggest culprit in July was Gauteng’s Primeserve/Rand Plastics which owed the pension/provident funds and all the levies including sick pay R1.7m!
Other companies owing the MEIBC more than R250 000 were:* Hydro Sebenza East Coast – R619 621. Of this more than R450 000 was underpayments to its 239 workers.* Africa Wide Labour/Prentec – R333 726.* Menel Projects – R277 968. Of this total, it had underpaid its 17 workers by more than R170 000.
Employers had better watch out – if the labour broker doesn’t pay by a certain time, the employer is liable for his debts!
