If you work for any of the big auto manufacturing employers (VWSA, DCSA, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Ford, GM) you belong in auto.
If your company makes components for cars you could be in the engineering or motor sector. Look on the walls of the office of your employer. If you see Retail Motor Industry (RMI) you belong to the motor sector. If you see the Steel Engineering Industries Federation of SA (Seifsa) you belong to the engineering sector.

If your company works with metal and you make parts for the mining industry and other manufacturing enterprises you are probably in the engineering industry. Look for notices from Seifsa in your workplace.
If your company manufactures tyres, then you fall in to the tyre sector.
There are many workplaces that do not fall into any of these sectors. They negotiate at factory level. Check with your shop steward.

DAY ONENumsa is really a giant organisationMncedisi Phaphu

AS I was coming into the conference room I could not recognise the comrades that I know! It was like a school uniform red, black and yellow. The beautiful look cast my mind back to pre-1994 during the defiance campaigns where we used to hold rallies and marches throughout the country.

As usual the Eastern Cape regional secretary Irvin Jim led the house with a hot old revolutionary song “ilizwe lelethu”, just before the second vice president, Cedric Gina, outlined the programme.

As the house stood up to sing the national anthem again my mind was taken back to when the first South African black President was sworn into power at Freedom Square in Pretoria – Oh! What a day comrades. After the introduction of guests especially those from Nigeria, Swaziland, and Tanzania, he gave the platform over to the General Secretary Silumko Nondwangu and he spoke, he spoke and he spoke.

The crucial question we must all ask!Francois Quarrie

NUMSA’S NBC began on April 24. It aims to finalise the full set of demands for this year’s negotiations. In the face of an incoherent growth strategy and the challenge of high unemployment in SA, Numsa is concentrating on advancing worker demands through collective bargaining. The ghost of apartheid seems to have sown fear in the workplace. This is evident by the lack of implementation of gains made by Numsa in all sectors.

While greedy bosses continue threatening workers with retrenchments, dismissals and disciplinary action, labour brokers whip workers’ rights to shreds and workers frantically trample over one another in their battle to feed their families. Had it not been for the political astuteness of a workers’ organisation like Numsa, the ghost of apartheid’s past would certainly colonise the soul of workers and claim another generation of South Africans in poverty and confusion.

Numsa’s response to the challenge of ensuring a better life for all is captured in its 2007 theme: “Confronting the logic of capital through collective bargaining.”

The Numsa general secretary, Silumko Nondwangu’s open question to the conference “Can this round of bargaining confront the logic of capital?” was enough to engage the debate. Indeed, the same question is asked of all Numsa members: “Are we ready to confront the logic of capital in our workplaces?”
