FUTURE MUSIC of e-Bhayi – HIP-HOP
Somewhere in the township of Motherwell in PE a young man of 25 working in VWSA is taking the hearts and minds of young girls and boys with his Hip-Hop music. Ayanda Billie had a heart to heart with Gino.
Where are you from?Born and bred in Port Elizabeth in the township of New Brighton.
When and how did you get into hip-hop?In the ’90s rap music stole my heart. In my school days I founded music groups with friends but now some of them are married with no interest in hip-hop. But me, I’m still standing, I have a deep passion for music. Some of my music is being played at KQ Fm and Bay Fm this makes one feel high.
When is your album coming out and who is producing it?It will be out in January next year. I recorded it at Base to Base studio in Jo’burg. I was working with MXO my homeboy. I left the album in their creative hands.
Your biggest influences?I’m a social commentator, the things that I see, the things that happen to me and those around. Life is my great influence, the hard life that I’m living.
How do you cope with work and music at the same time?It is not easy to be an artist, but I’m holding on. The hope I have is that one day my voice will be heard. The love of music keeps me strong. I am not planning on working here for the rest of my life – music is my call. It is a pity that many like me have seen their dreams die since they started working.
Is there any future for music in PE?Yes, our townships are full of youngsters that are talented. Only those with money can make a change. The only thing I have is hope. If there are supporters and people who like music, then the future is ours. And there are community radio stations that are playing our music. We appreciate such moves. In God I trust. This friendly city of ours have produced music gurus like Feya Faku, Sizwe Zakho, Mxo and Myman. Those before us have paved the way but we are not going to Jo’burg, we shall create the vibe here at home. e-Bhayi here we come!
