Stronger Together.
Protected Forever.
The world of work is changing – and not always
for the better. Rising unemployment, deindustrialisation, unfair labour practices, and employer hostility are real threats facing South African workers today.
In these challenging times, being part of a strong, reliable union isn’t just helpful – it’s essential.

NUMSA is the largest metalworkers’ union in South Africa, but our representation goes far beyond metal. We unite workers across diverse industries to ensure their voices are heard, their rights protected, and their working conditions improved.
Be part of a union that truly supports its members. Access exclusive resources, stay informed on important issues, and get involved in shaping the future of workers’ rights. Together, We’re Stronger.
Protects Your Job
Since the 1970s, NUMSA has led the fight for workers’ rights – winning higher wages, safer conditions and dignity at work. Today, we continue to defend jobs by resisting retrenchments, short-time and factory closures. We train shop stewards to stand by you in the workplace – to advise, represent and protect you – and we have secured Sick Pay Funds that provide maternity benefits and paid sick leave when your annual leave runs out.
Free Legal Advice
From the first day you join, NUMSA gives you free and professional legal support. Our skilled legal team will represent you at workplace level, through the bargaining council or the CCMA, and if necessary right up to the Labour Court. You are never alone when it comes to defending your rights.
Free Funeral Cover
NUMSA provides free funeral benefits for members in good standing and their dependents. Retired or ill members who have been with NUMSA for more than two years can continue receiving cover at no cost. Members who are retrenched, dismissed or resign can also remain covered for a small fee. We ensure dignity and support for you and your family in difficult times.
Free Bursary Scheme
NUMSA invests in your children’s future. Through our bursary scheme, members’ children can study specific courses at tertiary level. This is our way of opening doors to education and creating opportunities for the next generation.
Development Support
NUMSA supports members who are still working, as well as those who have been retrenched. We help you gain skills to re-enter the labour market or to start cooperatives and small businesses. Our goal is to build sustainable livelihoods for workers beyond the factory floor.
