On the 9th of August 1956 more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to reject the dehumanizing Dompas system. The pass laws were used as a tool of racial control and humiliation. The march was led by militant revolutionaries like Rahima Moosa, Lillian Ngonyi, Sophia Williams-De Bruyn to name but a few. These brave leaders defied the brutal might of the Apartheid state, and they did so with babies on their backs, and fire in their hearts. Their cry “Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo” still echoes across generations. They confronted the apartheid system by protesting against the Dompas which was designed to crush Black people. The pass laws intensified the daily violence inflicted on the working class and women stood face to face against the oppressor as part of the struggle to over throw the system. They were not passive victims, they were architects of resistance.

A bus driver was killed in Protea Glen in Soweto, and another was shot in Mapetla in Soweto. Both drivers were killed whilst on duty. NUMSA sends its deepest condolences to the families of Sam Slinder and Rhendane Tshilande whose lives were cut short by merciless criminals. It cannot be that workers are killed simply for doing their job. We demand that both PioTrans and Litsamaiso, which are the companies with the operating licence to run Rea Vaya, as well as the MMC for transport and the City of Joburg must urgently take steps to guarantee the safety of workers.

According to an article in the Citizen the auction is set to take place on the 5th of December. The RAF spokesperson confirmed in an article in the Citizen the sheriff of the court will auction items to the value of R18 million. This is deeply concerning because these assets belong to the state and seemingly nothing is being done to prevent this.

NUMSA has issued a strike notice to the company and it begins on Thursday the 14th of November.
- [NUMSA will challenge the unfortunate Labour Court decision dismissing the urgent application to secure basic fairness for workers at BMW](https://www.numsa.org.za/numsa-will-challenge-the-unfortunate-labour-court-decision-dismissing-the-urgent-application-to-secure-basic-fairness-for-workers-at-bmw/): The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has with immense disappointment and extreme concern, taken note of the judgment of Acting Judge Snyman in the Labour Court. At least 500 workers are facing dismissal in a disciplinary process embarked upon by BMW in relation to allegations of medical aid fraud at the company, in terms of which it outrageously refused to clarify what the actual charges were to which workers had to answer and who the so-called independent chairpersons would be.  It proceeded with the hearings, despite the fact that NUMSA was not in possession of all charge sheets, thereby making it impossible for NUMSA to make submissions on behalf of the affected workers. NUMSA was accordingly compelled to approach the Labour Court on an urgent basis on Thursday, (11 October 2024) in an attempt to ensure that there is compliance with basic fairness, in an otherwise utterly tainted disciplinary process.
- [NUMSA condemns the Bus Passenger Bargaining Council for failing to ensure that the bosses pay the healthcare benefit to workers!](https://www.numsa.org.za/numsa-condemns-the-bus-passenger-bargaining-council-for-failing-to-ensure-that-the-bosses-pay-the-healthcare-benefit-to-workers/): The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) condemns the Tshwane Affected Investment Operation (TAIO) that manages the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) stations in Pretoria. It has flatly refused to pay the benefit of primary healthcare, which was secured in the last round of wage talks. The management is demanding that workers must make submissions to it, on an individual basis, as to why they need to pay the primary healthcare cover. This is outrageous! Workers do not need to justify to employers why they must receive the benefit. The Main Collective Agreement (MCA) of the Bus Passenger sector is binding on all employers and therefore, they have a duty to pay.

The raids have also uncovered that many employers have been deducting UIF and not paying it over. This week NewzroomAfrika’s Nqobile Madlala reported that Tradecor Steel was raided for allegedly flouting labour regulations. According to the news report, Tradecor was among the many companies that have been exposed for allegedly exploiting undocumented workers.

In its desperation to appear relevant, the ANCYL in the area makes the false claim that NUMSA is ‘silent’ and by implication has done nothing to intervene in the plight of workers at the company.

Thirty four workers were massacred on this day, August 16, 2012. We must also remember the lives of ten workers, including mineworkers, security guards and the policemen who were killed between the 12th and the 14th of August in the days leading up to the massacre. This remains a dark day in post-Apartheid history, and we must never forget the lives that were lost. To date, the families of these victims are still struggling to live without their loved ones.

The survey shows that unemployment increased by 0,3% to 33,5%. The official unemployment rate has increased by 0,6% from 32,9% in the first quarter of 2024 to 33,5% in the second quarter of 2024.

NUMSA has been admitted to the Council and this means that the union will be able to represent security workers and negotiate collective agreements with employers, as well as dealing with labour disputes.

Dr. M’membe has been jailed by Zambian police and is being detained at the Twin Palm Police Station in Lusaka since the 8th of August. He has been arrested and charged with seditious practices and the charges are related to an article that was posted on his Facebook page, where he was exposing the corruption of the Zambian government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema. Almost a year ago, (9 August 2023), NUMSA issued a similar statement condemning the Zambian government for arresting Dr. M’membe on ‘trumped up charges’. He is clearly a victim of harassment by a paranoid, intolerant state.

- [NUMSA has deadlocked with Gautrain management over wage demands](https://www.numsa.org.za/numsa-has-deadlocked-with-gautrain-management-over-wage-demands/): The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has registered a dispute with the CCMA against the Bombela Operating Company (BOC), which operates the Gautrain. NUMSA is the majority union and the sole negotiating union at the Gautrain. We deadlocked with the bosses at Gautrain over its wage demands. Wage talks began on the 17th of April and we have had two rounds of talks. Our last meeting was on the 11th of June which is when we deadlocked with the employer.

MBSA is contemplating retrenching a total of 702 employees and the job categories which are likely to be affected are, Artisans (67), Team Managers (23) and 612 hourly employees. MBSA employs 3396 employees in total.

SA Steel Mills (SASM) was established in post-apartheid South Africa. Its management including its CEO, who is a man of Indian descent, Mr. Sachin Ahuja, is a beneficiary of the governments Affirmative Action and triple B-E-E polices, but under his leadership, Apartheid is alive and well in the workplace. SASM has violated the constitutional right to strike by dismissing workers for participating in a strike. It also refuses to allow NUMSA, the majority union to defend and represent workers. This is what used to happen under Apartheid, and the owners of SASM who are beneficiaries of this post-apartheid dispensation, which workers fought for, cannot justify their backward behaviour.

South Africa is experiencing a monumental shift in the country’s political landscape. The ANC lost 71 seats and for the first time in its 30 year history, it has lost its parliamentary majority. It managed to get 159 seats out of 400 parliamentary seats, and it lost its majority in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Northern Cape provincial legislatures.

The reason for the strike is that SA Steel Mills, as part of its campaign to undermine workers rights, refuses to recognise NUMSA full time shopstewards and therefore, it is ensuring that workers are not represented. We will be handing a memorandum of our demands to management and media are invited to the picket.

GM has announced that it is reducing its workforce at three of its factories in Sao Paulo state and it claims this is due to a ‘drop in sales’.

NUMSA is deeply concerned about the well-being of workers at SA Steel Mills following a horrific accident around 6:30 am on Thursday morning, where four employees were burned with molten steel lava. NUMSA was alerted to the accident by the Regional Secretary of Sedibeng, comrade Kabelo Ramokhathali. At least fifty people, including journalists, commentators, researchers, comedians and activists have been harassed by members of the New Delhi police, who raided dozens of homes on Tuesday, as part of an attack on press freedom in that country. NewsClick which is a popular, working class online news site based in India, is a victim of this attack.

The article states that the Regional Secretary has been reinstated by the CCMA because his suspension was found to be invalid and unfair and therefore the CCMA lifted the precautionary suspension, and said he can report for duty on the 3rd of July.
