Education: Reviving local dispute committees

By: Liesbet Mohutsiwa and Jenny Grice

Expect to see “˜on the case’ local dispute committees in the Wits Central West region after the region’s Johannes Mabuya and Mdlalose took dispute committee representatives through a three day course on assessing cases and understanding the law of dismissal.

Legal administrator, Magdalene Mahlangu is hoping that after these three days she will “receive files in time (from the locals) with all the proper documentation and that have merit”.

Some felt that the workshop had “renewed their minds” and opened their eyes to things they were not aware of.

Others were clarified on “which cases must be taken to the CCMA and which to arbitration and the correct forms of declaring a dispute.”

If your local does not have a local dispute committee, speak to your regional legal officer or regional secretary. It could save you your job!
