Zimbabwe: Now try a Zimbabwe trade unionist’s shoes

16 August 2005, Posted in News

Imagine having to apply for permission to hold a meeting of more than five people. That is what Zimbabwe ‘s Public Order and Security Act requires. Although trade unions are meant to be exempt, that is not what Tabitha Khumalo, secretary of the Women’s Advisory Council of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), has experienced.

For the last five years she has had to fend off assaults on her. Telling her story to the press at Cosatu House in mid-July, and nursing a black eye from her most recent beating, she told of her kidnapping by a group of Zanu-PF youth militia from a ZCTU workshop in 2000. During that kidnapping she was tortured and sexually abused for two days.

Since then she has endured further assaults and harassment with the most recent one taking place on July 9 when she was about to open a meeting of ZCTU women officials. The attack by a group of 25 men and women left her unconscious. When she regained consciousness and reported the assault to the police, they told her she had no permission to hold the meeting, there was nothing they could do.

Despite this, she said she would return to Zimbabwe because even though “they are torturing my flesh, they cannot torture my spirit.”

When South African trade unionists were beaten, detained, harassed and killed before the fall of apartheid, the trade union movement internationally rallied round to support them. Cosatu has now reiterated this call to the international trade union movement to “condemn such actions in the strongest possible terms”.

The only way to solve the crisis it said, was to establish a broad-based government of national unity embracing all political parties, civil society, church and labour organisations, to draw up a new democratic constitution and restore all human rights to the people of Zimbabwe .
