Numsa becomes a property owner

When Numsa officially opens its new conference centre in Newtown, Johannesburg on December 8, it will be the 11th building that it owns. All its regional offices and its head office are now fully owned by the Union. Numsa has set up a separate company, WIP Investment 40, to administer and control these buildings. It has also appointed a building manager, Zee Hassan, to oversee major repairs and renovations. While most of the regional offices house just Numsa, some like the Wits Central West region, also rent out to other organisations. This generates an income of R21 000 for the Union.”In the long run, having our own conference centre and offices will save the Union thousands of rands,” says Numsa’s national accountant Khalid Hassan. The new conference centre just opposite the Union’s Head Office will be called the Moses Mayekiso Boulevard in honour of Numsa’s first general secretary, Moses Mayekiso. The centre is currently being renovated at a cost of R4,2 million. The building is a national heritage site, one section of it was built in the 1830s! Later when Johannesburg was just starting to boom after gold was discovered, it was called the Diggers Inn Hotel and was a favourite drinking spot in the area though whether black workers shared tables and drinks alongside white workers is not clear!Meeting rooms in the conference centre will be named after past leaders of Numsa:* Daniel Dube, the first president of Numsa who came from the union Naawu.* Jabulile Ndlovu, a shop steward at Prestige in Pietermaritzburg whose house was firebombed and shot at by Inkatha during the 1980s. Both she, her husband and their eldest daughter were killed in the attack. * Percy Thomas, the man voted in as vice president of Numsa at the founding congress who came from the union Micwu.* Vincent Mabuyakhulu, the first vice president of Numsa who passed away in 2006.
