International: Organisational renewal – starting at home!

30 June 2003, Posted in News

Cosatu has put organisational renewal top of its agenda for the upcoming congress. While few affiliates seem to be taking this issue seriously, Numsa has six projects on the go to renew itself.

The most ambitious one is that of reviving the locals. Three regions – Wits Central West, KwaZulu Natal and Western Cape – are already trying out new ways of running the region.

In some regions, all organisers have moved to the regional office, in others just one administrator and one organiser remain in the local offices. Organisers in the region then have time to specialise – to educate shop stewards, to take up all the CCMA cases, to negotiate employment equity or to draw up skills plans.

By the end of the year, regions and locals will be asked to evaluate whether the restructuring of the locals is improving the efficiency of the organisation.
