Lesaka Holdings, a 70% union-company, bought Ferreira Group last year in a multimillion rand deal. Lesaka is a broad based consumer services company that uses the collective buying power of union members to negotiate better benefits and cost effective products.

Through its subsidiary, Ferreiras, Lesaka won the contract to administrate Numsa's compulsory basic funeral scheme for the fifth consecutive year.

Corne Ferreira, Lesaka Group Managing Director says: "We are proud of our longstanding relationship with Numsa and look forward to building on this relationship going forward.

Over the last four years hundreds of thousands of Numsa members and their extended families were covered on the Ferreira Provida funeral cover. Over the last year we paid out claims to 3 179 members and their extended families.

"We have implemented various measures to improve the service that we give our clients. One of which is the launch of the Lesaka Call Line 0861 520 520.

The call line offers our clients a more speedy, cost effective and convenient service. We also improved our communication channels with Numsa and have implemented various structures and regular meetings with the NUMSA head office and regional offices.

Shopstewards in remote areas can also now fax claims directly to the Ferreira Group offices. These additional measures will ensure that we are at all times aware of any problems experienced and it will further streamline the claims process.

Silumko Nonduongo, NUMSA General Secretary, comments: " We are comfortable that we have chosen the right partner to administer the Numsa basic funeral scheme.

This will ensure that Numsa members and staff benefit from a comprehensive package that Ferreira Group Scheme offers such as discounted prices during berea vement. We call upon our members to take advantage of this improved service."

Mr. Ferreira continues: "We are committed to keep premiums as low as possible but due to the increase in death claims we have increased the premium for the main members by 4.2% from R3.55 per month to R3.70 per month.

This increase is well below inflation and is only the second increase in five years. As proof of our continued commitment to all Numsa members we have negotiated a new free benefit whereby you receive discounted standardised funeral services from a national network of accredited funeral parlours.

"Our clients will be able to receive discounted funeral packages from any of the Goodall & Williams, Jones & Rice, Magadla's Funeral Home, Saffas, Doves and Grobbelaars/Saffas branches. All union members that are covered by one of our funeral products qualify for this free benefit.

For example a funeral package that usually sells for R9 000, we offer to Lesaka clients for only R4 875.

Mr. Ferreira concludes: " Lesaka together with its union partners will continue to pursue opportunities to provide our clients with more cost-effective products with improved benefits".
