THE first day of the Numsa 7 th National congress ended in a cultural evening.
Delegates were entertained by traditional music groups. The first group to take the stage was Abathandanzi (the prayer). They are very young traditional Zulu dancers from Soweto .
“The group was formed in 1987 and in 1988 they won their first national title. They performed in all the theatres, Civic, Market and Mandela Gardens . In 2000 they won their first international title at Mbabane in Swaziland ,” says Absalom Sithole, the Co-ordinator of the group.
Mzwakhe Mbuli was the next act. As he entered the audience rose in applause. The words of his poetry touched the hearts of the delegates. Everyone looked sad when he dedicated a song to all the heroes of the workers’ struggle including the victims of the 2003 May Day incident.
Even international guests joined the crowds in dancing.
There was no better way of finishing the day than being entertained by the best artists and the cream of South African music.
