Where did your money go?

At the end of 1999, Numsa had a deficit of R6 million. Since then with a combination of tight attention to spending and a close watch on employers’ payments of union subscriptions, the union has reversed this unhappy situation. At the end of 2002, the union had built up a surplus of R6 million.

This is how each rand of your subscription that you paid to Numsa was spent in 2002.

salaries and benefits paid 262 staff members – both administrative and organising staff
collective bargaining and education paid for all education courses and publications including Numsa News and all national meetings related to collective bargaining
legal expenses covered the costs of lawyers to fight unfair dismissals, retrenchments etc.
funeral benefit scheme
affiliation fees were paid to Cosatu, the International Metalworkers Federation and the International Chemical and Energy Federation
regions’ expenditure includes all the costs associated with running the region – running meetings, paying for telephones etc.
rent and electricity
leasing costs pay for office equipment that is rented – photocopies, faxes etc.
“other” includes costs of national meetings, stationery and other items.

The team (the National Finance Committee) that has ensured that your money is accounted for and well-spent is: worker representatives – Omar Gire (National Treasurer), Ike Phaahla, Nthabiseng Moleleki and Philemon Shiburi and full-time national accountant, Khalid Hassan. They have been supported by regional finance committees in every region.
