No rest until 2005

Although victory for the ANC in the Western Cape is written on beaming faces, Western Cape activists are not resting in the run up to next year’s local government elections.

Clement Herandien, Numsa Western Cape ‘s regional organiser, and the one in charge of Numsa’s electioneering campaign is wary of complacency. His wariness is based on studying how voters voted in his province. His biggest concern is that while rural voters showed their support for the ANC, in urban areas, they did not.

“In the local government elections next year we need to change that,” says Herandien. “We must get more people to vote for the ANC in urban areas. “Even at May Day rallies, the attendance was the same. It was rural people that attended rather than urban people.”

If the ANC wants to be the victor at local level as well, there is still a lot of work to be done, Herandien believes.
