Recruitment and service – how are we doing?Veronica Mofokeng

Recruitment is the first priority for an organization to build and sustain itself financially. Numsa aims to organise unorganised workers who work in the metal industry and to unite and build a strong organisation in the metal industries.

Only once it has united workers can it fight for workers' rights, against discrimination and oppression of the working class and for the gains that were achieved through the bargaining processes.

It creates this unity by servicing workers, taking their mandates and implementing them.

But according to Numsa's three motor recruiters in the Gauteng regions, the Union is failing to do the basics.

Recruiters report that when they try and recruit unorganised workers, these workers do not want to belong to Numsa. They complain that they have been members for 10 years without service.

In some cases union officials have failed workers and caused division in the workforce. The officials then resign from the Union but will never be found again. They say that shop stewards are not consulting with workers and instead are selling them out.

Workers told them that once they were organised into Numsa, they never saw another official nor did they know where to go if they had a problem.

However often it was just after they were recruited that their problems started. Some said they were forced to resign due to the pressure they got from their employers and from their colleagues.

Others say they were dismissed and harassed by their employers. Working hours were reduced, workers were divided into shifts to avoid paying overtime rates.

Others told of unscrupulous employers who deducted subscriptions from workers but didn't pay these across to Numsa. They would only discover this when they were trying to claim their funeral benefits when there was death in the family.

Some employers even went as far as deducting UIF and pension benefits from workers that they then used for themselves.

In the worst cases, the companies had decided to retrench all Numsa members and employ new workers on contract or through a labour broker.

When it came to foreign workers who were working illegally without IDs, often employers would force them to work under lock and key where they couldn't be seen.

The company would then register just a few of them who would be sent out of the premises to deliver goods and messages. They told the recruiters that it was better for them to join another union that would service them better than Numsa!

Is this the real picture of our organisation? Are we doing justice to our members? This is the challenge to all leadership across all levels of the organisation towards the October National Congress and after.

Personalities, friendship, power and interests do not assist if we forget our commitment to our members and the organisation at large.Write and tell us what you think about Numsa's service and how we can improve it!
