UPDATED! NUMSA members at Macsteel will picket outside the company to highlight their demands.

Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) at Macsteel will be picketing outside the company to highlight their demands.

Our members have been on strike since Friday (22 August) after the company forcefully retrenched workers and issued Voluntary Severance Packages, without consulting the union. They imposed termination letters on workers and harassed them forcing them into taking Voluntary Severance Packages (VSP) of a mere R40 000. The company was very antagonistic towards workers and it is our view that the ‘consultation’ process of the section 189 was a sham. The current strike was triggered because the management imposed VSP’s onto workers and when they refused, they were retrenched on the spot.

NUMSA condemns Macsteel management for attacking workers! As part of the strike members will be picketing. We demand the immediate reinstatement of workers who were retrenched! We also demand that the company offer a decent VSP’s!

Media are invited, details below.
